MISS USA- MISS NC USA- Pageants

What it takes to win the crown

OPENING NUMBER MISS NC USA

Pageants are Subjective- My Pageant History

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the MISS NORTH CAROLINA USA and NORTH CAROLINA TEEN USA pageant.
Being a former pageant competitor myself, I look forward to these pageants. In a way it is like I am reliving my
youth, but I love the beauty and grace all these women possess. I competed in the Miss Florida USA and Miss California USA pageants. I was the first preliminary winner the year they started doing preliminary pageants, Miss Broward USA. That year my competition was fierce. Very similar to the Top 10 at MISS NC USA. My first runner up at Miss Broward USA, Shannon Ford, went on to win MISS FLORIDA USA. I didn’t even place in the 5. I tell this story to illustrate that a different panel of judges can be a completely different result.

Pageants- Swimsuit- Evening Gown- Interview- “Pageant Budget”

Let’s face it pageants are not cheap.  Pageants have three stages. What baffles me after watching this past weekend at Miss North Carolina USA, is the amount of money these girls spend on their gowns, and completely neglect the investment and time to make sure their body looks the best in swimsuit. Don’t get me wrong, there were some HOT girls on that stage. But, at this level where are the 6 packs, the toned legs, the ‘rears’ that don’t jiggle? I need to vent cause personally if you spend $1000 LESS on a dress, and put that into a personal trainer, workout classes, and nutrition you could take your game to a whole other level. I say this, cause when I see the dresses that make the top 10 and top 5, it is evident that having a $$$$ evening gown isn’t going to get you to the top 5. It helps, but it is about being CONSISTENT in all the stages of the competition. Interview is another KEY element in this area. I personally know Lauren Merola, a pageant GURU, former MISS PENNSYLVANIA USA and fourth runner up at MISS USA. She is local here in Charlotte, and yet girls want to fly to NYC for interview and pageant coaching.

MISS NORTH CAROLINA USA and MISS NORTH CAROLINA TEEN USA- my opinion

I have judged many pageants here in the Carolina’s. I admit, it is tough. The ladies come by so QUICK, and you have to remember what they have done before. But, if I ran a pageant I literally would have the judges watch an edited piece of MISS USA and a MISS UNIVERSE pageant. I would want my judges to know what the “look” is. At the end of the day, it is SUBJECTIVE. Pageants are about growing, improving, and learning the rough lesson that sometimes “life isn’t fair”. Cause lets face it today’s kids are so sheltered they won’t even give rank trophies in little league. I really enjoyed watching some ladies improve since the last time I saw them compete. My advice for anyone wanting to compete, or wondering why they didn’t win would be to really look at your pageant budget, and ask what you are doing for preparation and asking “expert” advice outside of your family. So, many “misses” were made this past weekend that could’ve been corrected. I saw so many girls that I wish I had the chance of helping.

Miss NORTH CAROLINA USA: TOP 5 answer final question. Who do you think answered it best?

ELIZABETH SAFRIT

ELIZABETH SAFRIT

Danielle Wasser, My Fit Hero, is the official fitness/nutrition coach for Miss Charlotte USA and Miss Charlotte Teen USA

This year I had the pleasure of working with Elizabeth Safrit, Miss Charlotte USA. Elizabeth is a natural beauty. With my help, she had a 6 pack on stage this year, her legs were “toned” from when she won her preliminary, and overall looked the part of MISS NORTH CAROLINA USA. I am personally shocked she didn’t make the TOP 5, let alone win. But, I know these pageants are subjective. I also coached, Pammy Peters, who won MISS NORTH CAROLINA TEEN USA, AND, won BEST SWIMSUIT. Pammy’s body was already perfect. Yet, with my guidance we stepped it up a notch to make sure nothing was left on the table. Each of these ladies WANTED IT. It is so refreshing to work with girls who are willing to make the sacrifices to get the results.
